Well everyone! “Road Trip” has now come to it’s official end!

Lance and Alex can now breath easy knowing that their families, friends and homes won’t be bombed into oblivion. Sure they’ll be under Alien control for a few years, but that’s a small price to pay to keep everyone alive. And so Lance, Alex and Dante get to move on to entirely new adventures while mostly just trying to just kill some time.

I also liked adding a little more insult to injury for ol’ Sarge…

I hope you guys enjoyed this book! But don’t worry – I’m far from being done with Brainslug! I’m already planning for the next book and until that officially starts – I’ll be doing ‘Shots’ and maybe even shorts to keep you fueled with your weekly dose of Brainslug!

PS: What makes this EXTRA awesome is that the very first “Brainslug” comic was posted exactly 8 years ago this week. Pretty kickass way to celebrate an anniversary if I do say so myself!

For anyone unsure of how Dante was sedated so quickly, or need a refresher because they read it a long time ago, go back to re-read page 32-34 of “Road Trip”. [LINK]

If the Sarge wasn’t so high at the time, he could have remembered and used it himself… then he might not have ended up in tiny bits all over the place.

Next week is the epilogue (possibly a 2 page special as well) to wrap up the “Road Trip” storyline!

I’d like to apologize to newcomers trying out the site — the last string of comics haven’t been very ‘welcoming’ seeing as they’ve been so entrenched in the climax of the story. New people wouldn’t have any clue WHAT the hell is going on.

If any of you read this, I’m sorry! The conclusion of “Road Trip” is very close – after which there will be more comics that you’ll be able to “get” without knowing the 78 pages of back story for this book.

For everyone else! I have to say, I’ve been having a blast exploring the emotional range of Dante in ‘Road Trip’ — He has all sorts of different levels of “Terrifying” doesn’t he?

Am I going too crazy with my panel layouts lately? This one felt very ‘experimental’ by the end of it …

Regardless – next week – shit is getting BLOWN up!

I thought that instead of that, I’d give you guys a glimpse as to what you can expect in the final, definitive, printed (and e-book) version of “Brainslug: Alien Tongues & Road Trip” (tentative title).

I’m fitting all the old artwork into my new panel template style, doing a lot of dialogue editing to tighten up the story and most importantly, adding FULL COLOR!

I wanted to get some good back and forth combat between Dante and Sarge, I think this worked out well while still advancing the story as much as this page needed to.

I like the panel layout of this — it’s a bit of an homage to “Calvin and Hobbes” in layout — because I’ve been studying it a lot lately to learn new approaches that i might be able to use to make my comic better. The funny part is that the top section is actually a type of layout that Bill Watterson credited to having learned from yet ANOTHER comic called “Krazy Kat”…

Note: this is also titled after one of my favorite ‘fight’ music. Some may remember it from “Kill Bill” but here’s a link to a better version! LINK!!!

I guess Spirit Pie isn’t done with this book yet!

I tried a different colour approach to color this time, a combo of the ink-style shading with colour. It seems to help add definition, especially in crowded panels. I think the bit of extra time is takes to do it this way is worth it.
